Barry Hutchison is a screenwriter-turned-children’s author based in the Highlands of Scotland. Over the past three years Barry has written over fifty books for a broad range of ages, including the spine-chilling INVISIBLE FIENDS horror series for 10+ years, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books.
MR MUMBLES, the first of the Invisible Fiends books won a Royal Mail Scottish Children's Book Award in 2011. Barry has recently started a new ongoing series of comedy fantasy books for older readers under the AFTERWORLDS heading, again published by HarperCollins. The first book, THE 13TH HORSEMAN, has been shortlisted for the Scottish Children's Book Awards 2012. The follow-up, THE BOOK OF DOOM, is due to be published in early 2013. Barry also ghost-writes for a number of popular series.
Barry is a real champion of children's reading and writing, and visits scores of schools every year to give talks and run writing workshops. He recently, along with fellow writer, Tommy Donvaband, founded 'Start the Story', an online magazine aimed at teachers, librarians and parents, and designed to make literacy lessons more engaging for children of all ages.
Although living in the wild north, Barry travels all over the UK to promote both his own books and reading in general, and is teaming up with the National Literacy Trust in 2013 to help spread the word even further.
Barry can't remember a time when he didn't want to be a writer. He also can't remember when he last slept, but he thinks sleep's very overrated anyway.
