Joan Lingard's The Sign of the Black Dagger is a pacey historical mystery for 8 to 12s set in Edinburgh's Old Town. It tells the story of two children whose father simply vanishes one day... When they discover an old diary they find themselves linked with Edinburgh's Old Town 200 years previously, and a situation that mirrors their own.
