David Fickling, Mara Bergman, Julia Wells, Janetta Otter-Barry, Simon Mason and Sarah Odedina are amongst the editors who have been nominated - with their first time authors - for the Branford Boase Award this year.
The Branford Boase Award is unique in celebrating the the partnership between editor and author and will be announced tomorrow, July 11th 2013.
In today's Guardian, these editors give some insight into their role, and what they look for in a manuscript. The article is well worth a look.
'Good editors are always on your side,' says David Fickling. That can sometimes be hard for a writer to recognise, as their manuscript is returned with yet another set of detailed notes. Simon Mason goes further: 'You can choose to listen to criticisms (because they're good) and you'll make your book better as a result. Or you can choose to toss the criticisms away (because you've decided they're no good): that's fine too. But put yourself in the position of being able to consider criticism.'
Food for thought.
But nobody said it was easy...
